Life Cycle of a Frog
From egg to tadpole to frog
Duration: 1:54
How does a frog grow up? Join our little explorer at the pond, and watch a tiny egg turn into a jumping frog!
In short
A frog does not start its life as a frog. A mother frog lays lots of tiny eggs in the water; they look like little balls of jelly with a black dot inside. Stage one is the egg: inside each egg, a tiny tadpole is growing. Stage two is the tadpole: after a few days it hatches. It has a long tail to swim, and it breathes underwater with gills, like a fish. It eats and eats and grows bigger every day. Stage three is the froglet: back legs pop out, then front legs, the tail gets shorter and shorter, and lungs grow inside so it can breathe air. Stage four is the frog: the froglet hops out of the water and becomes a grown-up frog, with strong legs to jump and a long sticky tongue to catch flies. One day, the frog lays eggs in the pond, and the life cycle starts all over again. This big change is called metamorphosis. Frogs need clean water to live, so we must keep ponds and rivers clean.

Did you know that a frog does not start its life as a frog? So how does a frog grow up? Let's find out!
Here is the first secret. A mother frog lays lots of tiny eggs in the water. They look like little balls of jelly, with a black dot inside.
Stage one: the egg! Inside each egg, a tiny tadpole is growing.
Stage two: the tadpole! After a few days, the tadpole hatches. It has a long tail to swim, and it breathes underwater with gills, just like a fish!
The tadpole eats, and eats, and grows bigger every day. Wiggle, wiggle, swim!
Stage three: the froglet! Little back legs pop out. Then front legs! The tail gets shorter and shorter, and lungs grow inside, so it can breathe air.
Stage four: the frog! The froglet hops out of the water. Now it is a grown-up frog, with strong legs to jump, and a long sticky tongue to catch flies!
One day, the frog lays eggs in the pond, and the life cycle starts all over again.
Frogs need clean water to live, so we must keep ponds and rivers clean.
So now you know the secret! Egg, tadpole, froglet, and frog. This big change is called metamorphosis.
