Our Earth

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle

How recycling helps the Earth

Duration: 1:55

Where does all our trash go? Join our little explorer on a mission to help planet Earth, with three magic words!

In short

Every day, we throw away lots of things: bottles, boxes, cans, and paper. A lot of trash goes into a giant hole in the ground called a landfill, and some of it ends up in the ocean, where it can hurt animals. But we can help, with three magic words: reduce, reuse, and recycle. Reduce means using less: take a lunch box instead of a paper bag, and turn off the water while you brush your teeth. Reuse means using things again: a glass jar can become a pencil holder, and an old box can become a toy castle. Recycle means turning old things into new things: we put paper, plastic bottles, glass, and cans in the recycling bin. A truck takes them to a recycling center, where machines sort them, clean them, and break them down. Old plastic bottles can become a new T-shirt, and old paper becomes new paper. Banana peels and apple cores are not trash either: in a compost bin, they turn into rich soil for plants.

What you will learn

  1. Where trash goes: landfills, and sometimes the ocean
  2. Reduce: use less (a lunch box, and turning off the water)
  3. Reuse: use things again (a jar becomes a pencil holder!)
  4. Recycle: paper, plastic bottles, glass, and cans go in the recycling bin
  5. What happens at the recycling center
  6. How old bottles can become a new T-shirt
  7. How compost turns peels into rich soil

Hello again, little explorer! Today, we are going on a mission, to help our planet Earth!

Every day, we throw away lots of things: bottles, boxes, cans, and paper. But where does all that trash go? Let's find out!

Here is the secret. A lot of trash goes into a giant hole in the ground, called a landfill. And some of it ends up in the ocean, where it can hurt animals.

But we can help! There are three magic words: reduce, reuse, and recycle!

Number one: reduce. That means using less. Take a lunch box instead of a paper bag, and turn off the water while you brush your teeth.

Number two: reuse. That means using things again! A glass jar can become a pencil holder, and an old box can become a toy castle!

Number three: recycle. That means turning old things into new things! We put paper, plastic bottles, glass, and cans in the recycling bin.

Then, a truck takes them to a recycling center, where machines sort them, clean them, and break them down.

And then, surprise! Old plastic bottles can become a new T-shirt, and old paper becomes new paper!

Banana peels and apple cores are not trash either. In a compost bin, they turn into rich soil for plants!

So now you know the secret! Reduce, reuse, and recycle, to keep our Earth clean and beautiful.

What can you reuse at home? Great job, little explorer! See you next time, for a new adventure at Curious Kids Lab!
